A little Southern hospitality. A lot of league history.
Four days in Louisville, with Saturday reserved for the picks that will be debated all season.
Planning basis: your earlier plan was 12 people, a $10,000 total lodging ceiling, nonstop flights from IAD/DCA, Friday activities from 11–5, and a Saturday draft with catered lunch. Some supplied links specify 14 or 16 adults; adjust the budget below if the party has grown. All times are Eastern. Nothing is reserved.
Start with our recommended picks. Change a dropdown and your itinerary below updates instantly. Every night includes all 10 restaurant options.
Selections apply to this open page. These are planning choices, not reservations. Compare restaurants and group booking details.
Horse-racing reality: the published 2027 Kentucky calendar places Churchill Downs’ spring meet through July 4 and its next meet from September 9. Ellis Park has the summer meet, but is a substantial detour from Louisville. Keep the museum/track tour in this weekend; live racing would require redesigning Friday. 2027 race-date report · Official August calendar
Five approximate house areas, three activities, eleven food/drink stops, sixteen distilleries, three live-music venues and SDF appear together. Click a marker for details and website links.
Open or share the Google map ↗
H = house area · A = activity · F = food/drinks · D = distillery · M = music · SDF = airport. Every listed venue is pinned; house locations remain approximate. A2 and A5 have become D6 (Rabbit Hole) and D15 (Bulleit).
Location precision: H1–H5 are approximate area markers, not verified property addresses. H1 uses the Jeffersonville riverfront; H2 the Baxter Jack’s vicinity; H3 Shelbyville; H4 east Louisville; H5 Jeffersonville. Activity, restaurant and airport locations were resolved by Google from their names and addresses. Use venue directions for navigation; confirm the chosen house address with the host. Anyone with the map link can view it; web search discovery is off.
Select any house below to pair its five-photo gallery with its location on Google Maps. Browsing does not change your itinerary until you choose the stay.

Location accuracy: These pins are area reference points, not verified house addresses. H1–H2 use nearby landmarks; H3–H5 use broad listing areas. Exact locations need confirmation from the host. Photos come from each Airbnb listing and need an internet connection.
A listed 16-seat dining table makes this the clearest draft base. Pool, courts and game rooms keep Saturday easy.
My city-base pick for the group: its own lounge, karaoke and a location near the Highlands and NuLu.
Space, pool and games on a rural property. Choose it for more time together at the house and fewer downtown trips.
| House / listing | Listed layout | Why it works | What to confirm |
|---|
All five listing headers show 16+ guests. “Sleeps 16” does not mean 16 separate beds. These houses list 8–10 beds, so even the original 12-person party needs bed-sharing or host-confirmed extra sleeping arrangements. Live August 5–8 pricing, availability, minimum stays and cancellation terms were not verified.
Choose the whiskey you want to explore, then choose the visit that fits the group. These eight bottles offer a useful starting point across classic bourbon, rye and cask-finished styles.
Drinks International named Michter’s the world’s most admired whiskey brand in 2026, its fourth consecutive year at #1. The expert vote considers quality, consistency, value and branding. It is a brand-reputation award, not a blind-tasting win for every bottle.
Award & methodology ↗For a first Louisville visit, Old Forester gives you a compelling bourbon shortlist and a downtown production tour. Peerless is our specialist pick for bold oak lovers; Beam / Knob Creek for mature bourbon and a larger-group outing. Angel’s Envy or Rabbit Hole suit the group’s fruit-finish fans.
Compare the tour shortlist ↓Corn-led whiskey, commonly showing caramel, vanilla and oak. Start with Michter’s for a gentler introduction; 1920 for more intensity.
Often more peppery, herbal and dry in character. Bulleit 95 Rye is the style contrast for people who find bourbon too sweet.
Wheat can soften the grain-spice profile. Wine-cask finishing adds another influence: Dareringer combines wheat and PX sherry; Angel’s Envy uses port casks.
Another new-oak barrel can add toast, wood and richness. Proof is strength, not a quality score: 100 proof = 50% ABV. Barrel-proof batches vary.
How to read the rankings: the 1–8 order below is our editorial tasting shortlist for this trip, balancing character, variety and the linked visit. It is not a universal quality ranking or an average of critic scores. Flavor notes summarize the linked reviews; we have not personally tasted these bottles. Reviews cover particular releases or batches and some are older. A tour ticket does not guarantee a listed bottle will be poured or sold.
Straight bourbon · 115 proof
Flavor direction: Dark chocolate, caramel, char and baking spice.
Choose it when: Our first bottle to investigate if you want a big, classic bourbon and a strong downtown tour in one stop.
Tradeoff: The proof brings heat. Choose Michter’s or Angel’s Envy if you prefer a gentler pour.
Breaking Bourbon praises its balance and rich character, with an unusually enthusiastic verdict. The review is from 2017, so it is a reference for the expression, not a review of your future bottle.
12-year straight bourbon · 100 proof
Flavor direction: Oak, vanilla, leather and a dry, peppery finish.
Choose it when: Choose this over younger bourbon when you want the influence of extra barrel age without going to barrel proof. A good reason to consider the Beam campus.
Tradeoff: More wood and dryness than the fruit-forward finished bourbons; this is the standard 100-proof version, not the cask-strength release.
Breaking Bourbon’s 2020 review finds depth and complexity from the extra age and considers the premium worthwhile. Old review prices are not current quotes.
Double-oaked bourbon · barrel proof varies
Flavor direction: Heavy oak, cocoa, spice and a long, dry finish.
Choose it when: The adventurous pick for people who already enjoy strong bourbon. Compare it against 1920 to explore extra oak versus a high fixed proof.
Tradeoff: Potentially polarizing. Extra barrel influence can feel drying or overpowering; sample before committing to a bottle.
Breaking Bourbon describes an intense oak-driven bourbon and cautions that its richness can approach excess. Its reviewed batch was 107.4 proof; yours may differ.
Straight bourbon · 91.4 proof
Flavor direction: Honey, vanilla, dried fruit and oak.
Choose it when: A sensible first pour for a mixed-experience group. Michter’s also offers bourbon, rye and American-whiskey styles to compare.
Tradeoff: The famous brand and rare releases do not guarantee this entry bottle will be your favorite. Taste it against a less expensive bourbon.
Jade Cox’s June 2025 Whiskey Wash review praises its versatility and sweet, rounded profile. An older Breaking Bourbon review was less impressed by the value, illustrating why the bottle matters more than the brand name.
Port-finished bourbon · 86.6 proof
Flavor direction: Vanilla, light oak and wine-influenced fruit.
Choose it when: Start here if you favor wine, softer spirits or a lighter whiskey. The port finish offers an easy comparison with traditional bourbon.
Tradeoff: Less intensity and body than 1920 or Peerless. Fans of powerful pours may find it restrained.
Breaking Bourbon calls it a useful introduction to finished bourbon but finds the texture thin and the flavors lighter than expected. That restraint may suit beginners.
Wheated bourbon, PX-sherry finish · 93 proof
Flavor direction: Raisins, dark fruit, vanilla and barrel spice.
Choose it when: Pick this over Angel’s Envy when the sherry influence and a richer fruit profile sound more appealing. It also connects naturally to a NuLu visit.
Tradeoff: The finish shapes the flavor strongly; choose an unfinished bourbon if you want a cleaner comparison of grain and new oak.
David Levine’s Whiskey in My Wedding Ring review scores it 6.9/10, finding a balanced fruit-and-spice profile rather than syrupy sweetness. That is one reviewer’s scale, not a crowd average.
Straight rye · 90 proof · 95% rye mash
Flavor direction: Citrus peel, mint, herbs and pepper.
Choose it when: Try it if bourbon often tastes too sweet, or you prefer rye-style cocktails. It is the clearest style contrast in this shortlist.
Tradeoff: A brand visit is not necessarily a tour of where a bottle was distilled: the reviewed Bulleit Rye was made at MGP in Indiana, not at the Shelbyville bourbon distillery.
Breaking Bourbon’s 2021 review finds bright, appealing flavors but a simpler finish and limited complexity. It is a useful rye introduction rather than our premium sipping pick.
Bottled-in-bond straight bourbon · 100 proof
Flavor direction: Caramel, vanilla, brown sugar and light pepper.
Choose it when: Our value-minded choice for the house and a useful baseline in a comparison tasting. Higher price is not automatically a better fit.
Tradeoff: Less layered than the premium shortlist. The downtown Evan Williams Experience is a visitor attraction, not the main plant making every Evan Williams bottle.
Breaking Bourbon finds a full-flavored, sweet-focused bourbon with modest complexity and strong value. Use the review for character, not its historical retail price.
Our ranked shortlist for this group, based on the experience and logistics. Tripadvisor figures below rate the visitor attraction, not the whiskey or a specific tour package. They are the snapshots checked October 31, 2026 in the distillery cards below.
| Our order / venue | Best fit | Visitor reviews | Group tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| #1 · Old Forester | Best overall city tour Production stages plus barrel making make it our strongest all-round introduction. | 4.7 / 5 · 337 reviews Reviews & booking links | Public cap 14; 16 need another arrangement. |
| #2 · James B. Beam | Best full-campus outing A recognizable brand family, a roughly 75-minute tour and a restaurant make it an easy anchor for a bourbon day. | 4.6 / 5 · 1,620 reviews Reviews & booking links | Up to 24 adults per current standard booking; requires a drive to Clermont. |
| #3 · Angel’s Envy | Best introduction to finishing A polished downtown experience for understanding how a second cask changes whiskey. | 4.7 / 5 · 1,041 reviews Reviews & booking links | Public cap 12; larger groups need adjacent tours. |
| #4 · Stitzel-Weller | Best bourbon-history setting Choose the historic campus and rickhouse atmosphere when the story matters as much as the tasting. | 4.7 / 5 · 925 reviews Reviews & booking links | Private-group inquiries for 10+; historic-site emphasis. |
| #5 · Rabbit Hole | Best modern NuLu setting A contemporary production tour that pairs conveniently with the restaurants and bars already in your plan. | 4.7 / 5 · 158 reviews Reviews & booking links | Public cap eight; your group needs two departures or a private option. |
More ways to choose: Peerless is a strong tasting-focused alternative (4.8 / 5 from 545 visitor reviews). Evan Williams has a large review base (4.6 / 5 from 1,323) and suits bourbon-history fans. Michter’s is worth prioritizing for brand enthusiasts even though its attraction score (4.3 / 5 from 246) is lower. Those figures do not establish which whiskey tastes best.
For hands-on bottling or a smaller producer, compare NuLu, Uncle Boojie’s and Old Louisville Whiskey. For a farm setting, see Jeptha Creed. They are outside this bottle ranking because comparable bottle-review evidence was not gathered, not because their whiskey is necessarily inferior.
Sixteen local distilleries and whiskey experiences, from Whiskey Row to Shelbyville, Crestwood and Clermont. Choose one anchor visit for Friday; the itinerary adjusts the route, lunch and afternoon around it. Heritage sites and tasting/bottling experiences are labeled in each card.
My starting pick: Old Forester. A downtown production tour keeps the Derby Museum and NuLu lunch in the day. For 16 people, compare a private Stitzel-Weller visit or Beam’s larger standard tour capacity. All tour slots below are planning targets, not reservations. Budget bottles separately; book group transport.
